The Irish Film Board (IFB) has announced the Irish films that are set to screen at this yearâ?™s Cannes Film Festival. The projects being shown at the event include Element Filmsâ?™ ‘The Guardâ?™ which is being sold by Metropolis International Sales and is showing on Saturday, May 14th; and ‘The Runwayâ?™ which is being represented by 6 Sales.
‘The Guardâ?™, written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, sees Emmy winner and IFTA winner Brendan Gleeson playing an unorthodox Irish policeman who joins forces with Don Cheadleâ?™s straitlaced FBI agent in a bid to take on an international drug-smuggling gang. Produced by Chris Clark and Flora Fernandez Marengo for Reprisal Films and Ed Guiney (Garage) and Andrew Lowe (The Wind that Shakes the Barley) for Element Pictures, ‘The Guardâ?™ completed full picture and sound post production at Screen Scene and Ardmore Sound with Gary Curran grading, Warren Dowling DI finishing and Niall Brady as Sound Designer.
Ian Powerâ?™s ‘The Runwayâ?™ (Fastnet Films) is loosely inspired by the true events of a South American pilot who crashed his airplane in a field near Mallow in Cork in 1983. Against all odds, the eclectic people of a depressed town called Dromoleen come together to build a runway, fix a plane and get the pilot home, in doing so briefly catching the imagination of a nation. Posted here at Screen Scene, Gary Curran was HD Colourist on the project while Simon Thornton was HD Finisher.
Culture Ireland and the Irish Film Board will again this year host a special reception to celebrate Irish film talent on Saturday, May 14th. The confirmed list of Irish filmmakers who will be in attendance at Cannes 2011 will be announced in the coming days.
